About me

[edit]

Hi! I am an undergraduate in Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, majoring in Linguistics.

I am a Python hobbyist, and am currently maintaining a few Discord bots for a few games I play. I'm currently picking up Java, with a focus on the ArtiSynth project.

I was a contributor in the school project HG2052 Language, Technology and the Internet, to expand on a linguistics-related page as an introduction to how wikis work. The page our team worked on was word taboo.

Let's get along!

Draft can be found here.

Selected page: Word taboo

A field in anthropological/sociolinguistics where cultural norms impose restrictions on utterances in language.

Also known as linguistic taboo, taboo language.

Possible enhancements for page

  • Improve page summary.
  • Problematic page title:
    • Taboo does not just apply just for words. It can involve other aspects such as register.
    • Could nominate a page rename to taboo language or linguistic taboo.
      • But linguistic taboo redirects to naming taboo, but is not the same thing. What to do?
    • Supported by existing comments on the talkpage.
  • Missing exposition sections:
    • Theory (causes, consequences).
    • Examples.
    • Statistics on frequency/distribution among languages.
  • Quality of existing content:
    • Unclear/missing citations.
    • Lack of association to related topics: naming taboo, the sociological phenomenon of taboo etc.

Sources

  • Main texts:
    • Allan & Burridge (2006). Forbidden words. Cambridge University Press. (link)
    • Storch (2017) Typology of secret languages and linguistic taboos. In The Cambridge Handbook of Linguistic Typology.
    • Also sources ibid. (many).
  • Existing sources on the page.

Feedback

  • Re: renaming - refer to academic consensus. Drop a note on the related pages. Use "What links here" tool to find redirects and update.
  • Good to have examples from other languages. Can use Malay (referring to hunting game).
