ARTICLE EVALUATION

Originally, I sought out the topic of “Fat Phobia” in Wikipedia because of the relevance of body image & acceptance in today's world.  I was unable to find articles that pertained to this topic, so I tried the words “body positivity”. This led me to an article titled “The fat acceptance movement”. The title piqued my interest, so I followed the link. I found three aspects of the article worth commenting on. Is each fact cited with an appropriate, reliable citations; is the article up to date; is the article itself neutral? or are there heavily biased claims or language?

When I first read this article, I questioned the validity of the topic. After verifying the credibility by referencing sources outside of Wikipedia, I clicked each of the links and citations located in the article. I found that they all seemed to be active. Though all of the links seemed to be in good working order, there was not always credible information found, when clicked. For example, one of the links brought me to an information page about a sociologist named Charlotte Cooper who appeared to have done extensive research into the movement. Clicking on her name, I was brought to a page where I found a message from Wikipedia which stated, “This biography of a living person needs additional citations for verification”. This was the case for other links as well.  

I clicked on the “talk" page I found on Wikipedia because I wondered when the article had last been updated.  I found that a person named Laurier had updated the page on November 14, 2021. It seemed they made some language suggestions so that the topic was more inclusive and relevant to the climate of modern society. Another link I tried was for a group called NAAFA. When clicked, I found the link was outdated and contained a message that stated that the article relied heavily on a single source.  

Though the topic of “The fat acceptance movement” is very controversial, the article itself seems to have been written in a neutral tone; depicting only the facts and not the emotions connected to the movement itself.  

In conclusion, though this article seems to be well written, it left me wanting more information on the topic. For instance, the article’s originator brought up a “fat in” that occurred in 1967. They stated that many of the activist who attended were carrying signs that depicted an actress named Sophia Loren but did not include an explanation of why they were carrying signs with her picture on them. Other than that small oversite, I found the article intriguing and would recommend the read.

About me

My name is Audrey L. Sweet, and I was born in Seattle Washington on April 10th, 1976, on what I can only assume was a cold, wet morning.

I've been told that my birth was not an easy one for my mother as I was born in a way that they refer to as Frank Breech. Frank Breech is the most common type of breech; a baby born in this fashion is born bottom first with its legs straight up near its head. I like to joke that I was a beautiful baby because my face wasn't bruised from the birth canal like a lot of other babies.

My date of birth is very common, I share it with a handful of famous people and at least one famous event.

A few of my celebrity Birthday twins include, Haley Joel Osment, John Madden, and Mandy Moore.

The famous event that occurred on April 10th was when the Titanic started its journey in 1912. It later struck an iceberg and sank, interestingly enough on my mother's birthday, April 15th.

I recently read an article which stated that Titanic 2, a replica of the original, is scheduled to launch 2022. Fingers crossed; it will be successful and not share the same fate as its Doomed namesake.

I enjoy the sport of Roller Derby and spend most of my waking hours thinking about it. I started out my Roller Derby career as an Official in 2006 and when I couldn't stand to just sit on the sidelines and watch anymore, I started playing. I've been skating for a little more than a decade now and I don't plan to ever stop. I envision myself still attempting to play while living in my elder care facility. Currently I am working on writing a Roller Derby novel as well as producing some coaching materials for other Roller Derby enthusiast.

I enjoy reading the facts, information and articles on Wikipedia and I have gleaned a ton of useful information from this site. Once I am an established writer, I would like to give back to Wikipedia by spending my time writing about Roller Derby, fitness and the Athletes that play the sport. I would also love to help keep articles and information updated by conducting extensive research on my favorite subjects and make some much needed changes.
