Ahmet TURER (1970–) is a graduate of Ankara Ataturk Anadolu Highschool and Middle East Technical University (METU) Civil Engineering Department in 1993. He worked at Gurol Teknik and MNG Gunal Construction companies as Structural Design Engineer and Project Planner, respectively between 1993 and 1995. He went to USA for his Masters and PhD in Structural Engineering. He has worked in numerous research projects about load rating and structural evaluation of bridges. Structural Health Monitoring (SHM), Structural Identification (St-Id) by finite element model (FEM) calibration, numerical optimization, non-destructive testing (NDT) are among his research interests. He returned back to his home country in 2000 after compliting his PhD. Since then he is a full time professor at METU, Civil Engineering Department, Structural Mechanics laboratory [1].
Dr. Turer continues to elaborate on his research interests at METU expanding into earthquake engineering. He has been working on SHM of modern and historical civil engineering structures including bridges, tunnels, and buildings. He has been the primary investigator and researcher in a number of successful TUBITAK projects. [2]. He has submitted a winner project to World Bank development marketplace in 2003 (DM2003) and won research grand out of 2700 worldwide submissions for a project about strengthening masonry houses using scrap tire rings (STR) for economy type houses of low income citizens. [3]. His research showed that masonry clay brick and briquette type walls can be strengthen up to 10 times their original strength using low cost STR application.
Ahmet Turer is married to Dilek Turer since [1995], and they have two daughters.
