Agincourt Junior Public School

Overview

Agincourt Junior Public School is an elementary school located in Agincourt, Toronto. The school was founded in 1913 to serve the Agincourt community. When the school was first founded it had only 4 class rooms, in which grades 1 to 12 were taught within. As the years went on classrooms were added and it currently has eight class rooms and two portables all used for educational purposes. Agincourt is now just an elementary school teaching children from junior kindergarten to grade six, from their children are sent to Sir Alexander Mackenzie Senior Public School a school in which they go through grades seven and eight, and from there students attend Agincourt Collegiate Institute where they continue their education up to grade 12. Agincourt Junior Public school is a part of the Toronto District School Board just as most schools in the Greater Toronto Area. The school on a usual year has about 210 students. With class average class size of about 25 students. The school just recently in 2013 celebrated its hundred year anniversary. The school is widely known as one of the oldest schools in Scarborough. The school has a library fully equipped with computers and books for children to borrow during school and or after school.

Accomplishments

The school has been recognized as an ecofriendly school and has been certified as a Gold EcoSchools for the last three years. They achieved this by planting trees, making sure to manage waste by putting it in allocated bins, reducing photocopies, and by conducting park and community clean ups. They have also managed to implement an EcoSquad program within the school with both teachers and students that assure a high degree of commitment to keeping the environment safe and clean. Agincourt Junior Public school got a rating of 8.9 out of 10 on Education Quality and Accountability Office testing which is a provincial test that was developed to assure that student education is on par throughout the province . This test ranks about 2735 schools throughout Ontario, and in the Scarborough region Agincourt Junior Public school scored 8.9 leaving them in second place out of 41 schools. The averaged ranking over the 41 schools is 6.6. This makes it evident that the education level at Agincourt Junior Public school is above average. The school has also implemented a daily physical education program in which students are expected to take part in a fifteen minute exercise recess each day. This is to keep children active and healthy.

Extra Circulars

Students that attend the school have extracurricular available to them such as choir, band practice, strings practice, folk dancing, reading club, and a school safety patrol. With choir students can spend time after school practicing their vocals. With band and strings practice students can spend time once a twice a week during lunch time to learn to play an instrument. In folk dancing children can learn the art of folk dancing and do rehearsals for school assemblies. In reading club students can take part in book reading group discussions with other students and teachers. Safety Patrol is for grade six students to help keep cars moving in the mornings so that people may drop their children off safely at school and keep traffic low so that everyone gets to school on time and in a safe manner.
