Notes: Evaluating Wikipedia

  • "Start" or "Stub" class articles aren't considered as reliable, or simply don't provide a very strong overview of the topic. These are great articles to evaluate and edit.fac
  • Qualities of Strong Articles:
    • Clear overview
    • Clear structure with several headings and subheadings, arranged chronologically or by theme
    • Balanced, neutral coverage.
    • Reliable sources cited throughout the article
  • Signs of a Weak Article:
    • Warning banners
    • Language and grammar issues
    • Few references, or references to unnamed sources.
    • Unequal length of otherwise equally relevant sections
  • Editors can challenge unreferenced statements by adding a {{fact}} tag
  • Should be citing at least once per paragraph, but quotations, hard facts, and controversial claims must always be cited.
  • Information on Wikipedia must:
    • Come from independent sources
    • Come from sources known for fact-checking and neutrality
    • Come from reliable publishers and represent a general consensus in the field.
  • Poor sources include: Blog posts and social media, press releases and promotional material, official websites, and self-published materials.
  • Be careful to avoid copyright infringement
  • To add a citation:
    • Check that the bottom of the page has a "Notes" or "References" section. If not, type: ==Notes==.
    • Check that the Notes section either has the text {{reflist}} or <references />. If not, type: {{reflist}}.
    •  Click after the text you would like to create a reference for
    • Type in the <ref> tag before the reference and type </ref> after the reference.
  • The "View History" page displays a list of recent changes to an article, with comments regarding what other editors have altered.
