Chise, sometimes called Chiz, is a is a populated place and a ghost town in Sierra County, New Mexico. Chise is located at an elevation of 5,718 feet / 1,743 meters along Cuchillo Negro Creek.[1]
History
[edit]Chise was an agricultural town founded first as a ranch by Bentura Trujillo 1832-1913. [2]: 81–82
The Site Today
[edit]Chise is now a home to one family, and to the former town church, the Chapel of St. Gregory.[5]

[edit]- An agricultural town founded in the mid-1800s, Chiz was named for Apache leader Cochise (his Apache name was "Chise" or "Cheis," meaning "wood"), who camped in the area and was friendly with the Bentura Trujillo family, town founders.
