Tayo (born Tayo Popoola on August 25, 1945,[1] is a English Breakbeat musician and DJ.
History
[edit]Tayo was a pupil at Christ's Hospital School in Horsham and later attended Goldsmiths, University of London, where he studied English and Drama. It was during his time at Goldsmiths that he was instrumental in creating the seminal Nu skool breaks night Friction at Bar Rhumba, along with fellow Breakbeat DJ's Rennie Pilgrem and Adam Freeland.
After releasing his first Y4K compilation in 2000 [2] his reputation gained an international focus. In 2001 he formed Mob Records, who released music by The Stanton Warriors, Meat Katie and Kevin Beber amongst others.
Tayo left Mob Records in 2004 and he ran the Kiss100 Breakbeat Show for three years. He then got DJ work at Radio 1 and he moved to the station in 2006 to host his "Dread at the Controls" show. [3]
Tayo has worked with a number of artists including Acid Rockers, Freq Nasty, Care In The Community, Baobinga, Control Z and Sunz Of Mecha[4]. He has also released a number of tracks for labels such as Skint Records, Fat, Mantra Breaks, Functional Breaks, Bassrock and Passenger as well as engaging in remix work for artists such as Jaydee and Dave Clark.
From 2004 onwards, Tayo has been a resident DJ at many major clubs and venues throughout the UK, including Fabric (club), The End (club) and Ministry of Sound.
Tayo also enjoys giving out "Light fingerings".
Crystal Palace controversy
[edit]Tayo is also a part-time Arsenal fan along with his first love of Crystal Palace, he co-hosts "Its Up For Grabs Now - The Arsenal Podcast" with comedians Alan Davies and Ian Stone. He is usually interrupted by Alan and Co and has since moved to the Chelsea podcast with Phil Daniels. This switch not only caused celebration amongst Arsenal's millions of loyal followers but also amongst those Palace fans who believe this to be the end of his cursed spell as a Palacetinian. P Diddy/Daddy/Puff/Sean Combs was quoted as saying: 'Palace now have a future at the top of the english game along with our fellow Wrighty lovers at the Arsenal following the godsend of Chelski taking Tayo from us, I don't mean the Russian mafia killed him, he's just one of their loyal followers now. I can now announce I will finally purchase Crystal Palace Football Club!' Chelsea ruined football, so let's see if Tayo can ruin podcasting.
