Life and Work
[edit]Imke David grew up in Franconia in Erlangen in a musical family. As a 6-year-old she was a member of the seven-member gamba ensemble made up her family members.
As gifted students, she was admitted as a junior student at the 1986. She studied Early Music, majoring in viola da gamba with Jordi Savall at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis. After a short while, she became a steady member of Savall's ensemble HesperionXX.
Major influences during her study’s in Basel were Jesper Christensen, Andreas Staier and René Jacobs. Professional appearances soon followed with Cantus Cölln, Concerto Palatino, Concerto Vocale under the direction of René Jacobs, Hesperion XXI under the direction of Jordi Savall, Le Concert des Nations. She was the first Gambe player to be awarded. prize at the international competition for Early Music in Bruges, Imke David 1997
Imke David performs internationally as a gamba player and has taken part in radio broadcats and CD recordings. Between the years 1991 to 1996, several compositions for solo game were composed for her by the composer Art Clay, which she then went in to premier and record. With the project "Broken Words", a text and music - Performance with Urs Jaeggi (text) Art Clay (live electronics) and Imke David ( Air-Bow), she explored the use of the Gambe in modern settings.
As one of the first musicians, she under took research on the Italian Early Baroque continuo instrument lirone and developed the chordal style of playing on the 13-string string instrument. In the play technical implementation by the Organ similar was established timbre for underpainting of Lamentation and recitative s in the performance practice in the works of Claudio Monteverdi and his contemporaries.
Since 2010, Imke David is a professor of viol, Lirone and violone at the Department of Early Music of the Hochschule für Musik Franz Liszt. There ,she teaches in addition to the interpretation of the different styles of European Renaissance music early and High Baroque, She is also active in international competitions as a judge.
