Anton B.Dougall; A Maltese Celebrity Chef
Anton B. Dougall, born in Cospicua, Malta on the 8th March 1952. Started his education at the Cospicua Primary, De La Sale College, MCAST, Westminster College UK, and the Catering College at Leeds Polytechnic UK. In 1971 he started working as a Chef at the Villa Rosa Hotel in Malta. In 1980 Anton moved to The Halland Hotel Malta as General Manager. In 1981 he started his own business in publishing, contract catering, restaurants and a Hotel. It was 1971, only 19 years old; Anton published his first cookery book called Tisjir Professjonali. This was a great success since it was practically the first cookery book with international recipes intended for the local Market. Up to now Anton published more than 40 cookery books in Maltese, English and German, namely the best sellers were a set of 350 cookery cards (25,000 copies) Tisjir bil ghaqal, 4 books combined with his weekly TV show with same name, (80,000 copies), Taste of Malta various different editions about Maltese food (30,000 copies) Anton now is working on a set of 50 cookery cards about Maltese food in English, another set about cakes. He is working on a major book called taste of Malta, a collection by Gorgina Dougall (grandmother) and a set of 25 videos. It was also 1971 when Anton had his first TV cookery programme, he never stopped since then. He was most famous when in the 80’s he directed and produces more than 120, 45 minutes TV programmes for the National TV. This was the first time Malta saw cookery programmes on TV. Anton was a pioneer in this sector. Today he has his weekly programmes on 2 different stations. Apart from TV Anton always had his radio talk shows on various Radio stations. For the past 15 years he had his programme on RTK radio every Friday. This is well followed especially with Maltese migrants in various countries. In 1976 Anton formed the first and still the only cookery club in Malta known as ‘Klabb tat tisjir’ (www.tisjir.com). This was a huge success from the start and it is still popular till today, reaching its 40th year. He organised the first cookery courses in Malta, published more than 40 books, and still has his own weekly radio and television programmes. Now the Klabb tat Tisjir has its own website, www.tisjir.com reaching its 12,000 members by its weekly newsletter. During the years Anton B. Dougall was the Chef responsible for various promotions of Maltese food, in London, Paris, Italy, and North Africa. He was also the Chef Patron for state banquets during the Presidency of HE Dr Anton Buttigieg and HE Agatha Barbara. Anton is member of the Hotel and Catering Institute, Royal Society of Health, Contract Caterers Association, Association Culinary Frances, Couchi Italiani.
Anton is married to Mariella and they have four children, Rudi, Felicity, Pearl and Nigel.
