PROM’CLASSIC

[edit]

During the first two weeks of January, an emblematic charity foot race of 10 Km takes place, the "Prom’Classic". It is the first major sporting event of the year for the french city of Nice Côte d'Azur since it is always on the second Sunday of January. This race brings together all profiles of runners. Every year the charity changes and thanks to runners and sponsors, it allows raising funds for different causes and hospitals. Owing to its increasing popularity and sometimes the willingness of participants to achieve records, like the one by Saïd TBIBI in 2007 in 28' 38, the Prom Classic has occupied the first place in the list of the most beautiful 10 km in France since 2010. The foot-race name comes from the event's location: the 7 km-long avenues “Promenade Des Anglais”, worldwide known.

Popularity

[edit]

In 2007, the Prom'Classic experienced a historic event. Indeed, for the first time since its creation, the famous Promenade des Anglais was completely closed to traffic. It was thus able to offer its participants an exceptional start on both roads. During this year, the Moroccan Said TBIBI set a record of 28 '38. In 2010, the 10th anniversary of the Prom'Classic allowed the event to gain even more notoriety and participation with a total of 5700 runners. The following year, the 11th edition broke the record with 6100 registered, and in 2012 with 7,000 athletes. In 2015, for a departure at 10:00 am, there were 7 departure waves. For the 20th edition, Prom' Classic registered a total of 9602 runners; which is almost double the 10th edition.

Causes

[edit]

Depending on the year, the participants run for different charities and diseases.

2007 = Breast Cancer

[edit]

During the 2007 edition, people ran for breast cancer which is a type of cancer that is most prevalent in women and touches around 58 500 people each year and kills 12 150 people.

[edit]

In April 2007, a french singer Grégory Lemarchal, died because of complications of cystic fibrosis. In honor of him, the “Prom’Classic” organizers selected cystic fibrosis as the cause for the 2008 edition.

2010 = Down's syndrome

[edit]

The 10th “Prom’Classic” cause was the trisomy 21 disease, also known Down’s Syndrome (DS) which is a genetic disease with an extra third chromosome 21. It is the main genetic cause of intellectual disabilities and it has been estimated that DS occurs in about 1 in 732 infants in France.

2021 = Secours populaire

[edit]

The “Secours Populaire Français” has a global approach to poverty issues. It intervenes in the areas of food aid, clothing, access and maintenance in housing, access to care, socio-professional integration, access to culture and more generally access to rights. So, this race hepled the organization to raise funds during the 2021 edition; even though it was done through a connected race due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

2022 = AIDS

[edit]

The 2022 edition of the “Prom’Classic” ran to spread awareness about AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) which is a disease that touches around 5000 people each year and kills more than 400 people in France.

Conclusion

[edit]

This footrace is much more than just having fun with family and friends, it allows to raise awareness among the runner and the population about different types of disease or health conditions that may affect the dailylife of others. Another goal of this race is to raise funds that will be helpful for different organizations, associations and hospitals like the pediatric Lenval hospital in Nice.
