Western Depictions of the Sultanate of Women
[edit]The Imperial Harem and the women in it were frequently represented by European artists, despite the fact that these artists were denied access to Ottoman women because of Islamic practice. Scholars thus agree that European artists created a visual identity for Ottoman women that was largely imagined.[1] Images of Ottoman women such as Hurrem Sultan were very common in the early modern period.
