History
[edit]The first Belgrade airport - Banjica
[edit]The story begins at the end of 1910, when an airfield was built at the military training ground in the suburbs of Banjica as the first Belgrade airport. At that airport, the pioneers of the then aviation, Simon, Maslenikov, Vidmar and Cermak, showed flying by plane. Soon, in addition to the airport, at the beginning of 1912, the first wooden hangar for airplanes was built and it was intended for war with Turkey. Two years later, a Serbian airplane squadron and a balloon company were stationed at that airport. [2] The Banjica airport was used even after the First World War for the needs of postal traffic on the route Skopje-Niš-Belgrade-Novi Sad and Belgrade-Sarajevo-Mostar. Today, the Military Medical Academy - (Serbian: Војномедицинска академија, romanized: Vojnomedicinska akademija; abbr. VMA) is near the place where that airport was located.
Kalemegdan Airport
[edit]One of the stages of development is the airport that stretched from the then Turkish amam, today's planetarium, to the mouth of the Sava into the Danube. From that place, the first aircraft took off in January 1911, and today it hosts the sports and ultralight aviation rallies.
The story of the airport’s development continues not far from Pančevo. Namely, a new airport was opened near that city in 1923 after the Franco Rumen airline launched the Paris-Constantinople international line. In the same year, postal traffic was established from that airport, and for a period of time it was used to train Aviation Academy pupils of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia’s Air Force. After the liberation, the airport was used as an aerospace military college. Today, at the site of the old Pancevo airport, there are the halls of the Utva aircraft factory, as well as a grass runway used for trial, sport and training flights.
Belgrade International Airport
[edit]The penultimate historical and developmental stage is the Belgrade International Airport, built on a meadow called Dojno Polje, located between Bezanijska kosa and the left bank of the Sava. In March 1927, the airport was officially open to traffic. However, in February 1928, the flights of the first domestic airline, Aero Put, began to operate. At the airport itself, in 1931, a modern dock building was built, and in 1936, landing gear for low visibility conditions was installed. However, in 1944, the airport ,previously used by the Germans, was destroyed while they were fleeing from Belgrade.
The story ends near Surčin, 18 kilometers west of Belgrade, at the location which had been chosen as the location of the new international airport. When it was commissioned in 1962, the airport had one 3,000 meter runway, a 3,350-meter taxiway, a passenger dock, a control tower, and an aircraft service platform. Later, a new passenger reception building was built, an airstrip was extended, and an expanded airplane receiving platform was installed. In 1997, Category 2 equipment was installed to enable the use of the airport in adverse weather conditions.
