Appearance
Æthelwold (died 902) was a son of King Æthelred of Wessex. On the death of his uncle, Æthelred's younger brother Alfred the Great, Æthelwold fought his cousin Edward the Elder for the kingship of Wessex. Driven out of Wessex in 899 he found support among the Scandinavian rulers in England and also among the West Saxons and Mercians. His second attempt to drive Edward from power ended with his death in a particularly bloody battle at the Holme in East Anglia, perhaps modern Holme, Cambridgeshire or Holme Hale in Norfolk.
