The Moon family are a fictional family from the BBC soap opera EastEnders. The family first appeared from 2002 to 2005, when Alfie Moon (Shane Richie), his brother Spencer Moon (Christopher Parker) and their grandmother Victoria Moon (Hilda Braid), known as Nana, were the key family members. Brothers Jake Moon (Joel Beckett) and Danny Moon (Jake Maskall) were also introduced in 2004 as Alfie and Spencer's second cousins, and they departed in 2006. Another second cousin, Maxwell Moon (Andrew Paul), appeared briefly in 2003. Alfie's first wife Liza Moon (Joanne Adams) also appeared briefly, before Alfie's marriage to Kat Slater (Jessie Wallace) in 2003. Alfie and Kat returned to the series in 2010, and Alfie's second cousin once removed Michael Moon (Steve John Shepherd) followed shortly after. Kat gave birth to Tommy Moon, who was actually fathered by Michael. Michael's father Eddie Moon (David Essex) and half brothers Anthony Moon (Matt Lapinskas) and Tyler Moon (Tony Discipline) joined the series in 2011. Michael's brother Craig Moon (Elliott Rosen) also appeared in 2011. Michael married Janine Butcher (Charlie Brooks) in 2012 and they had a daughter, Scarlett Moon. Michael's branch of the family had all left by 2013, leaving just Alfie, Kat and Tommy. Kat had an affair with Derek Branning, leading to Alfie and Kat's divorce. Alfie had a brief marriage to Roxy Mitchell, but soon reunited with Kat, and they had twins, Bert and Ernie Moon, in 2014. Alfie and his family left EastEnders in 2016 and appeared in the spin-off drama series Redwater in 2017.

2002–2006

[edit]

Alfie arrives after being ejected from the tube for fare evasion and quickly takes on the role of manager at The Queen Victoria public house. Alfie's brother Spencer and grandmother Victoria ("Nana") move in. Alfie grows close to barmaid Kat Slater and they start a slow relationship, but it ends when she is unable to trust him. Kat gets engaged to local gangster Andy Hunter (Michael Higgs), who knows Alfie's feelings for Kat, so warns him to stay away from their wedding. Kat visits Nana in hospital, and thinking she is asleep, reveals her feelings for Alfie. Nana tells Alfie, and rushes to the wedding to confess his love for Kat. Kat jilts Andy but he swears revenge. Kat and Alfie get engaged and arrange a Christmas Day wedding, but he is still married to Liza. With only days to go to the wedding, Liza makes it difficult to finalise the divorce, so Alfie is forced to cancel the wedding, but gets a friend to pose as a vicar. Spencer convinces Alfie not to start his marriage with a lie, so he tells Kat the truth. Alfie's lawyer then brings the decree absolute and the wedding is able to go ahead. Alfie borrows money from Andy to help bail Kat's father Charlie Slater (Derek Martin) from prison. Andy demands money each week, knowing Alfie cannot afford it. He offers Kat the chance to pay off the debt in full by having sex with him, and she reluctantly agrees, not knowing that Alfie has paid the money. Andy keeps the money and sends Alfie a recording of him and Kat having sex. Their marriage breaks down and Kat leaves Walford.

Alfie starts a relationship with Kat's sister Little Mo Mitchell (Kacey Ainsworth) and they are about to announce their relationship with Kat returns, wanting Alfie back. Alfie chooses Kat and lets Mo down with a hug, but her ex-husband Billy Mitchell (Perry Fenwick) sees the hug and assumes they are an item, so reveals this in public. Kat leaves Alfie again. However, they grow close again and help to complete Nana's wishlist of things she wants to do before she dies. After she dies, Alfie decides to travel across America, and Kat goes with him.

Kat and Alfie return and it is revealed that Alfie has been in a Spanish prison for six months. Kat reveals she is pregnant, but the child is not Alfie's; the father is Alfie's second cousin once removed, Michael Moon (Steve John Shepherd). Alfie leases The Queen Victoria public house, to prove to Kat that he is responsible, and Michael helps pay the rent. After an argument with Alfie, Kat agrees to move to Spain with Michael, but ultimately changes her mind and reconciles with her husband. Kat gives birth to Tommy Moon, and is rushed to hospital the next day due to complications. While she and Alfie are absent, James, the newborn son of local resident Ronnie Branning (Samantha Womack), dies of sudden infant death syndrome. Ronnie swaps the babies in an act of desperation, allowing the Moons to believe their son is dead. Michael returns to see his son but shows no emotion at learning that he died. Four months after taking Tommy, Ronnie returns him and a DNA test reveals the truth.

Kat finds out she is pregnant and Alfie, believing he cannot have children, believes Kat has cheated on him. She insists otherwise, and their relationship suffers. Kat has a one-night stand with Mark Garland (Chris Simmons), which she regrets after hearing a voicemail message from Alfie saying how much he loves her. She later tells him about the affair, and he says he would rather have Kat cheat on him and not know about it than not have her in his life, and refuses to allow her to explain that she does not want to have further affairs. Kat visits her father Charlie Slater (Derek Martin), and Alfie becomes close friends witih Roxy Mitchell (Rita Simons). Later, Alfie starts a pub football team and pays more attention to that than to Kat, leading to Kat starting an affair with Derek Branning (Jamie Foreman). She eventually admits the affair to Alfie, so he attempts to repair their relationship. However, when he discovers the affair is with Derek, he ends the marriage and files for divorce. He starts a relationship with Roxy and proposes to her, though it is clear that he still loves Kat.

  • Michael etc.

Kat supports Alfie after Michael's death, and the two become closer. The night before his wedding to Roxy, Alfie and Kat share a passionate kiss, but he still marries Roxy. Roxy then realises Alfie is still in love with Kat, and she orders him out of the church. Alfie reunites with Kat, but Phil Mitchell sells the Vic as revenge for Alfie's treatment of Roxy, his cousin. Kat reveals to Alfie that she is pregnant with twins, and they move in with Kat's grandmother, Mo Harris (Laila Morse). The twins, Bert and Ernie Moon (Freddie and Stanley Beale), are born.

Origins

[edit]

The Moon family are introduced to EastEnders by executive producer Louise Berridge in 2002. Alfie, the first of the family to arrive, was conceptualised by EastEnders' scriptwriter Tony Jordan.[1] The character is based on Jordan himself, and Julia Crampsie, the BBC's casting executive, recommended that Shane Richie be considered for the role.[1] The family comprised just three members at the time: Alfie, his brother, Spencer, and their grandmother, Nana.

Alfie goes on to marry Kat,

Jordan suggested that many of the rows featured on-screen between Alfie and his love-interest Kat were word-for-word arguments he had with his wife, Tracy. He commented, "We'd be watching EastEnders at home, then an Alfie and Kat scene would start and I'd think, 'Oh shit', because I'd know what was coming. And then we'd have another row about how I don't argue properly because when we do argue I'm just making mental notes for stuff to write the next day."[1]
