EastEnders is a British soap opera, examining the domestic and professional lives of working class people who live in the fictitious London Borough of Walford in the East End of London. The show entered its 28th broadcast year on 1 January 2013 with its 4560th episode and finished on 31 December 2013 with its 4774th episode. Lorraine Newman executively produced the show until August 2013 when Dominic Treadwell-Collins replaced her. Newman's final credited episode aired on 5 December; Treadwell-Collins' first credited episode was broadcast the following week, on 9 December. EastEnders aired 212 episodes in 2013, with the the typical week comprising four half-hour episodes on BBC One, in a time slot of 7.30 pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays and 8.00 pm on Mondays and Fridays. Each episode is thirty minutes in length, with the exception of four one-hour episodes. A six-minute episode was broadcast as part of Red Nose Day 2013, focusing on the character of Liam Butcher (James Forde), who has joined a gang. Two special episodes were also aired on BBC Red Button: the first focusing on Dot Branning (June Brown) prior to her return to the show, and the second focusing on Bianca Butcher (Patsy Palmer) and Terry Spraggan's (Terry Alderton) time in Manchester.
Storylines during 2013 include: a love triangle between Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden), Sharon Rickman (Letitia Dean) and Jack Branning (Scott Maslen), climaxing with Sharon and Jack's failed wedding; Liam Butcher's gang involvement; Lauren Branning's (Jacqueline Jossa) alcoholism and affair with married man Jake Stone (Jamie Lomas); the custody battle for Scarlett Moon (Amelie), which led to Michael Moon's (Steve John Shepherd) murder; Bianca Butcher and Terry Spraggan's relationship; Dexter Hartman's (Khali Best) kidney donation to his father, Sam James (Cornell S John); gangster Carl White's (Daniel Coonan) presence on the Square, which causes the disappearance of Shirley Carter (Linda Henry) and a feud with Max Branning (Jake Wood); Jean Slater (Gillian Wright) finding happiness with Ollie Walters (Tony O'Callaghan) and the start of a breast cancer story for Carol Jackson (Lindsey Coulson).

Cast and characters
[edit]Khali Best was introduced as Dexter Hartman in January and his estranged father, Sam James (Cornell S John) was introduced in May.[1][2] Liam's gang involvement saw appearances of Kane, Little Chris, Renzo, Ali and Tayo (Harry Rafferty, Rizwan Shebani, Chase Willoughby, Leanne Dunstan and Youssef Berouain) between March and April 2013.[3] Daniel Coonan was cast as Carl White and debuted on 1 June 2013.[4] Ben Hardy became the sixth actor to portray Peter Beale on 7 June when he returned to the show.[5] Kate Magowan and Jamie Lomas joined the show as married couple, Sadie Young and Jake Stone in August.[6][7] Cindy Williams returned in a regular role, now played by Mimi Keene in August 2013.[8] In September, three former cast members returned to the show. Samantha Womack returned as Ronnie Mitchell, having last appeared in July 2011[9] and Barbara Windsor made her first guest appearance as Peggy Mitchell, three years after her memorable departure.[10] Michael French reprised his role as David Wicks for the his first regular stint since 1996.[11] Terry Alderton joined the cast in November 2013 as Bianca Jackson's (Patsy Palmer) boyfriend, Terry Spraggan, with George Sargeant and Jerzey Swingler joining Alderton as his children, TJ and Rosie Spraggan.[12] The role of TJ and Rosie's mother, Nikki Spraggan was cast to Rachel Wilde in December 2013.[13] In late 2013, Treadwell-Collins' first castings were announced as Luisa Bradshaw-White, Danny Dyer, Kellie Bright and Sam Strike in their respective roles of Tina, Mick, Linda and Johnny Carter.[14] Tina made her first appearance on 18 November 2013, with Mick, Linda and Johnny debuting throughout late December. Tessa Wyatt, Tony O'Callaghan and Lisa Maxwell guest starred throughout the year as Betty Spragg, Ollie Walters and Naomi respectively. Betty appeared between 5 and 15 July 2013 as Patrick Trueman's (Rudolph Walker) friend, Ollie appeared between 11 July and 17 September as a love interest for Jean Slater (Gillian Wright), and Naomi guest starred on 27 September as David Wicks' (Michael French) girlfriend.[15][16]
The first half of the year encompasses departures for Zainab Khan (Nina Wadia), Ayesha Rana (Shivani Ghai), Ray Dixon (Charles Venn), Mr Lister (Nick Wilton), Tanya Branning (Jo Joyner), and Tyler Moon (Tony Discipline).[17] Popular actors of the show, Scott Maslen and Steve John Shepherd, who played Jack Branning and Michael Moon, announced their intentions of leaving the show in early 2013.[18][19] Jasmyn Banks, who had played Alice Branning for over a year, was written out as part of Michael's exit.[20] Jack left Walford on 15 October 2013 after his ex-wife Ronnie broke his heart[21] and on 1 November 2013, viewers saw Michael stabbed by Alice, before being stabbed by Janine who killed him.[22] Alice pleaded guilty to Michael's murder and left the show on 24 December 2013.[23] Clare Perkins and Cornell S John, who played Ava Hartman and Sam James, were axed by Treadwell-Collins in September 2013 and both left three months later.[24] David Witts quit his role as Joey Branning in October 2013 and following Alice's exit, Joey chose to leave Walford on 26 December 2013.[25][26] The role of Bobby Beale was recast from Alex Francis to Rory Stroud during early 2013. Francis had made his latest appearance in September 2012 and Stroud debuted on 1 March 2013.[27]

List of episodes
[edit]In the typical week, EastEnders airs four half-hour episodes in a time slot of 8.00 pm on Mondays and Fridays, and 7.30 pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The episodes broadcast on BBC One, with a repeat of each episode airing the same evening on BBC Three alongside a weekly omnibus edition airing on Sundays. There were also two shorter episodes shown on BBC Online and BBC Red Button.
Until episodes broadcast in December, each episode was executively produced by Lorraine Newman, whose decision to leave the show after sixteen months in the position of executive producer was announced on 29 July 2013, with Newman commenting that she was "confident" that she was "leaving the show in a stronger place".[28] The show's former story producer, who had left in 2010, Dominic Treadwell-Collins, was announced as Newman's successor and of his appointment, Treadwell-Collins said "I'm looking forward to building on her [Newman] work and taking this iconic and essential show into 2014 and beyond".[28] Newman's final credited episode was broadcast on 5 December, with Treadwell-Collins' first credited episode broadcast on 9 December.

[edit]The New Year focuses on the follow up from Derek Branning's (Jamie Foreman) death,[32] and the continuation of the 2012 Christmas Day surprise that Max Branning (Jake Wood) was secretly married to Kirsty Branning (Kierston Wareing),[33] which led to the break-up of Max's relationship with Tanya Cross (Jo Joyner).[34] It was announced on 8 December 2012 that Sharon Rickman (Letitia Dean) would receive two proposals from her partner, Jack Branning (Scott Maslen), and former partner, Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden), on New Year's Day, forcing her to choose between the two men.[35] In the second episode, Sharon accepts Jack's proposal and declines Phil's proposal.[36] Additional storylines include Ayesha Rana's (Shivani Ghai) crush on Masood Ahmed (Nitin Ganatra),[37] the return of Dot Branning (June Brown), eight months after she made her temporary departure,[38] and Lola Pearce's (Danielle Harold) battle to see her daughter, Lexi Pearce (Dotti-Beau Cotterill).[39] The month ends with the break-up of Whitney Dean (Shona McGarty) and Tyler Moon (Tony Discipline) when Tyler attacks Joey Branning (David Witts) for kissing Whitney.[40]

Elsewhere, Lola takes a liking to Dexter, but he fails to hide his shock on learning she has a baby. At the gym, Jack and Dennis bond over boxing. Kirsty and Lauren talk where she suggests that Lauren should cut down on the booze or prepare to face the life that Kirsty has. Tanya tries to get intimate with Max, but he rejects her and admits he still has some feelings for Kirsty, but loves Tanya more. [edit]This month sees the end of Masood Ahmed (Nitin Ganatra) and Zainab Khan's (Nina Wadia) relationship when Masood realises there was too many issues to make their relationship work. Zainab, who has discovered that Ayesha Rana (Shivani Ghai) has a crush on Masood, subsequently leaves Walford with their son, Kamil Masood (Arian Chikhila).[43] Love triangles between Jack Branning (Scott Maslen), Sharon Rickman (Letitia Dean) and Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden), and Tanya Cross (Jo Joyner), Max Branning (Jake Wood) and Kirsty Branning (Kierston Wareing) continue as Phil tries to win Sharon's affections, resulting in Jack angrily assaulting him,[44] whilst Max develops a relationship with Kirsty and secretly pursuing a reunion with Tanya.[45]
Liam Butcher (James Forde) features prominently as a new storyline begins featuring him regularly skipping school.[46] Another storyline commencing in February is Alfie Moon (Shane Richie) deciding to divorce his wife, Kat Moon (Jessie Wallace), so that he can focus on his new girlfriend, Roxy Mitchell (Rita Simons).[47] Also, Lucy Beale (Hetti Bywater) is involved in a short storyline which sees her discover a lump on her breast and consider it cancerous, but discover it is safe.[48]

[edit]This first quarter of the month focuses on the custody battle for Lexi Pearce (Dottie-Beau Cotterill) between her mother, Lola Pearce (Danielle Harold), and grandfather, Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden), as they attend a court hearing.[49] Phil is also placed as the focus of another story when he and Sharon Rickman (Letitia Dean) kiss, which is discovered by Sharon's friend Tanya Cross (Jo Joyner) after she and Phil kiss in a surprise twist.[50] March also sees the continuation of Liam Butcher's (James Forde) gang involvement storyline and a six-minute special episode was broadcast on 15 March during Comic Relief featuring Liam's story.[3] The storyline climaxes when one of the gang members (Rizwan Shebani) stabs Liam on orders from the gang leader, Kane (Harry Rafferty), horrifying Liam's mother, Bianca Butcher (Patsy Palmer), and grandmother, Carol Jackson (Lindsey Coulson), who witness the attack.[51] Additional storylines include Dot Branning (June Brown) discovering the council may repossess her home and Abi Branning (Lorna Fitzgerald) losing her virginity to Jay Brown (Jamie Borthwick).

[edit]It was reported on 2 April 2013 that Jack Branning (Scott Maslen) would jilt his fiancée Sharon Rickman (Letitia Dean) at their wedding after deciding he loves his former wife, Ronnie Mitchell (Samantha Womack), more than Sharon.[56] Following her temporary departure in September 2012, Janine Butcher (Charlie Brooks) returns to the show in April. Brooks explained that Janine would fight for custody of her daughter, Scarlett Moon (Amelie), upon her return.[57] Liam Butcher's (James Forde) gang involvement storyline concludes in April when he decides to leave Walford, following a confrontation with gang leader Kane (Harry Rafferty). Liam's exit marks Forde's temporary departure from the series.[58] This month features Kirsty Branning (Kierston Wareing) deciding to tell her husband, Max Branning (Jake Wood), that she is pregnant with his child and Max subsequently asking Kirsty to terminate the pregnancy. Supplemental episodes
[edit]The show aired two BBC Red Button specials in 2013. The first special was announced on 20 December 2012 and was entitled "Dorothy Branning: The Next Chapter". The special would see Abi Branning (Lorna Fitzgerald) visit her step-grandmother, Dot Branning (June Brown), who she had not seen since her departure in May 2012. A show statement said, "Why has Dot stayed away from Walford for so long? Why won't she come home? We're about to find out when Abi Branning leaves the East End on a mission to seek out her Grandma Dot…".[82] The second special was announced on 24 October 2013 and was entitled "T & B 4 Eva". The special revealed how Bianca Jackson (Patsy Palmer) and Terry Spraggan's (Terry Alderton) relationship began after their first meeting in Manchester.[83] On 26 June 2013, it was announced that Tamwar Masood would feature in his own four-episode Internet spin-off series called Tamwar Tales – The Life of an Assistant Market Inspector. The series was available on the official EastEnders website starting on 25 July 2013, with weekly episodes.[84]
