Cast and characters
[edit]Following the creation of spin-off show EastEnders: E20, the four main characters of the series were introduced: Zsa Zsa Carter (Emer Kenny) − the niece of Shirley Carter (Linda Henry), Leon Small (Sam Attwater), Fatboy (Ricky Norwood) and Mercy Olubunmi (Bunmi Mojekwu). Whilst Kenny, Attwater and Norwood debuted in January, Mojekwu did not appear in the main show until May.[1][2] Kenny and Attwatter departed in September.[3] Mercy's grandmother Grace Olubunmi (portrayed by Jay Byrd in EastEnders: E20 and Ellen Thomas in the main show) began appearing in June.[4] Glynis Barber and Liam Bergin were cast as Glenda Mitchell and Danny Mitchell, the mother and brother of Ronnie (Samantha Womack) and Roxy Mitchell (Rita Simons) respectively.[5][6] The role of Glenda was originally cast to Jill Gascoine, but she withdrew from the role.[7] Bergin was axed from the show and left in June.[8] A new love interest for Max Branning (Jake Wood), Vanessa Gold (Zöe Lucker) was introduced in June.[9] Her daughter and husband, Jodie Gold (Kylie Babbington) and Harry Gold (Linal Haft), were also introduced. Haft departed in November.[10][11] Cathy Murphy joined the cast as Billy Mitchell's (Perry Fenwick) former girlfriend, Julie Perkins.[12] Following a guest appearance in 2009, a love interest for Tamwar Masood (Himesh Patel) - Afia Khan (Meryl Fernandes) was introduced as a regular character.[13] Afia's father, Yusef Khan (Ace Bhatti), was also introduced and later revealed to be the ex-husband of Tamwar's mother Zainab Masood (Nina Wadia).[14]
The first half of the year encompasses departures for Al Jenkins (Adam Croasdell), Manda Best (Josie Lawrence), Todd Taylor (Ashley Kumar), Bradley Branning (Charlie Clements), DCI Jill Marsden (Sophie Stanton), Dotty Cotton (Molly Conlin), Rachel Branning (Pooky Quesnel) and Amira Masood (Preeya Kalidas).[15][16][17][18] Upon his appointment, Kirkwood axed six characters and of those Minty Peterson (Cliff Parisi), Danny Mitchell (Bergin), Liz Turner (Kate Williams), Libby Fox (Belinda Owusu) and Adam Best (David Proud) departed in 2010.[8] Don Gilet departed at the conclusion to his character Lucas Johnson's storylines.[19] Tiana Benjamin chose to leave her role of Chelsea Fox after four years.[20] Chelsea, Libby and Liz departed following Lucas' exit.[21] Melissa Suffield was axed from the show in May 2010 due to "unruly behaviour" and her character Lucy Beale departed three months later.[22] Becca Swanson actress Simone James also departed from the show. Barbara Windsor announced her intentions to depart from her role as Peggy Mitchell in October 2009, having starred on the show for sixteen years.[23] Santer praised Windsor for work on the show, naming Peggy a "truly iconic character".[23] Scott Maslen (who portrays Jack Branning) temporarily left the series in October whilst he participated in Strictly Come Dancing.[24] Jordan Johnson actor Michael-Joel David Stuart left the series in December.[25] A departure for the character Peter Beale, portrayed by Thomas Law, was reported on 22 November 2010; he departed the following month.[26] The final character to leave the series in 2010 was Lacey Turner who chose to leave her role of Stacey Branning in April, having appeared on the show since 2004.[27] Stacey departed on 25 December.[28]
Dean Gaffney, Natalie Cassidy, Lindsey Coulson and Devon Anderson reprised their roles of Robbie Jackson, Sonia Fowler, Carol Jackson and Billie Jackson for the wedding of Bianca Jackson and Ricky Butcher (Patsy Palmer and Sid Owen) in February.[29][30] Whilst Gaffney and Cassidy only appeared in a handful of episodes, Coulson and Anderson returned to the show on a permanent basis. Anderson was axed by Kirkwood in September 2010 when it was reported that Billie would be killed-off.[31] For Billie's funeral, Howard Antony and Mona Hammond reprised their roles as Billie's father and grandmother, Alan Jackson and Blossom Jackson respectively.[32] Shay Spencer was cast as Alan's other son and Billie's half brother, Kai Jackson and appeared in two episodes alongside Alan and Blossom.[33] The character of Louise Mitchell was reintroduced in March, with the role now recast to Brittany Papple.[34] Lucy Benjamin was reintroduced for one episode as Louise's mother, Lisa Fowler, in August. The episode also saw Louise depart.[35] Jo Joyner returned to filming after taking maternity leave in 2009 and her character Tanya Branning appeared in one episode in June, before returning permanently in September.[36] Stefan Booth was cast as Tanya's fiancee Greg Jessop, appearing from October.[37] Following a brief appearance in 2009, Tameka Empson was reintroduced as Kim Fox, now a regular cast member.[38] Tanya Franks was reintroduced for seven episodes in August as Rainie Cross for Phil Mitchell's (Steve McFadden) drug addiction storyline.[39] Daniella Westbrook reprised her role of Sam Mitchell for an "explosive" storyline; Sam returned in August and departed again the following month.[40] Jessie Wallace and Shane Richie were reintroduced as popular couple, Kat and Alfie Moon, five years after they left the show;[41][42] they returned in September.
