EastEnders is a British soap opera, examining the domestic and professional lives of working class people who live in the fictitious London Borough of Walford in the East End of London. The show airs on BBC1 and entered its eighth broadcasted year on 2 January 1992 with its 721st episode, with Leonard Lewis and Helen Greaves continuing their role as executive producers, until Greaves left and Lewis continued in the role, for his first full year in the running. EastEnders aired 106 episodes in 1992, with the the typical week comprising two half-hour episodes on BBC1, in a time slot of 7.30 pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Characters that were introduced in 1992 included Christine Hewitt (Elizabeth Power), Mandy Salter (Nicola Stapleton), Nigel Bates (Paul Bradley), Shelley Lewis (Nicole Arumugam), Jack Woodman (James Gilbey), Richard Cole (Ian Reddington), and Andonis Papadopolous (Lee Warner). William Boyde made a guest return as James Willmott-Brown, while Michelle Collins reprised her role as Cindy Beale. The character of Steven Beale was also reintroduced, with the role recast to Stuart Stevens. Characters that departed the serial in 1992 included Lloyd Tavernier (Garey Bridges), Celestine and Etta Tavernier (Leroy Golding and Jacqui Gordon-Lawrence), and Gill Fowler (Susanna Dawson).
Cast and characters
[edit]William Boyde reprised his role as James Willmott-Brown in January to conclude his rape storyline with Kathy Beale (Gillian Taylforth); he subsequently left at the end of the storyline in February. The character of Cindy Beale (Michelle Collins) was reintroduced, alongside Cindy's son Steven, who was now played by Stuart Stevens. Both characters returned on-screen in October 1992. Three members of the Tavernier family departed from the show's main cast in June 1992: Lloyd, Celestine and Etta Tavernier (Garey Bridges, Leroy Golding and Jacqui Gordon-Lawrence). Susanna Dawson also left the series in June 1992, having spent over a year in the role of Gill Fowler. Gill departed following her wedding to Mark Fowler (Todd Carty), which was described as "one of soap's most tear-jerking weddings of all time."[1]
Executive producer Leonard Lewis took a tentative approach to introducing new characters in 1992. Most were introduced gradually, making an initial appearance and then joining the programme full-time a couple of months later.[2] Elizabeth Power was introduced as Christine Hewitt, a lonely divorcée who becomes besotted with Arthur Fowler (Bill Treacher) while he tends her garden; she debuted in February 1992.[3] She described the job offer as "out of the blue"[4] and was happy when Lewis contacted Power to reprise the role on a regular basis, which she accepted.[4] Troublesome teenager Mandy Salter was introduced in March, with seventeen-year-old Nicola Stapleton in the role.[5] Introduced as a friend of Grant (Ross Kemp) and Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden), Nigel Bates (Paul Bradley) made his first appearance in March 1992. Bradley described Nigel as "light and funny".[6] Nicole Arumugam and James Gilbey were introduced as college friends of Michelle Fowler (Susan Tully), Shelley Lewis and Jack Woodman in November 1992. Following guest stints, Arumugam was reintroduced into the main cast while Gilbey returned as a semi-regular cast member. The character Richard Cole was an exception to Lewis' approach and was introduced without gradual introduction.[2] Richard was described as "a bit of a lad, a charming womanizer" and was played by Ian Reddington.[2] Lee Warner made his debut as the infamous character, Andonis Papadopolous, the owner of the Bridge Street laundrette, in May 1992. He had been referenced on-screen several times before his arrival.[7]
