Jonathan Stratt was introduced as Brad Williams, a mobster heavy for gangster organisation The Firm. Nick Cotton's (John Altman) father and Dot Cotton's (June Brown) bigamous husband Charlie Cotton was introduced in March, with Christopher Hancock cast in the role.[1] William Boyde also joined the cast in March as brewery area manager, James Willmott-Brown. A prominent storyline of 1985 was Michelle Fowler's (Susan Tully) teenage pregnancy and in May 1986, Michelle gave birth to a daughter, Vicki Fowler (Emma Henry).[2] Following Vicki's birth, Judith Jacob was cast as Michelle's health worker, Carmel Roberts, but when the character proved popular she was introduced on a regular basis.[3] Show bosses decided in 1986 to tackle "an important and complicated story about the ups and downs of a pop group"[4] and thus The Banned, a fictional band within the show, which included some of the show's teenage characters, was created. For the storyline, three new characters were introduced: Harry Reynolds (Gareth Potter), Tessa Parker (Josephine Melville) and Eddie Hunter (Simon Henderson).[5] Irene (Katherine Parr) was introduced in July as a long-term recurring character, the aunt of Lofty Holloway (Tom Watt). The show's first homosexual characters, Colin Russell and Barry Clark was introduced in August and November, with the roles cast to Michael Cashman and Gary Hailes respectively.[3] Donald Tandy joined the show's cast in August as an elderly army war veteran, Tom Clements.[3] A love interest for Naima Jeffery (Shreela Ghosh) was introduced in November in the form of Dr Singh (Amerjit Deu), whilst Naima's cousin, Rezaul Kabir joined the show in December, played by Tanveer Ghani.[3] David Scarboro made several guest returns as Mark Fowler throughout the year, following his departure in April 1985.[6]
The first character to leave the series in 1986 was recurring police officer, DS Roy Quick (Douglas Fielding), in July.[6] Andy O'Brien became the first regular character in the series' history to be killed off in August 1986; actor Ross Davidson was axed following an altercation with show producer, Julia Smith, in which she threatened to write out his character and Davidson told her to kill him off.[6] Delanie Forbes was written out from her role as 11-year-old Cassie Carpenter and having not received a on-screen exit, Cassie last appeared in December 1986.
