Interests

[edit]

I am a student rep, and currently stand as the Campaigns officer for Scarborough at Hull University Union. I enjoy music, amateur drama productions and have an appreciation for retro art and classic cars.

Experience

[edit]

Marketing Intern - Autism West Midlands September 2012 - Present

Supporting the Head of Marketing, I am responsible for:

  • Developing design briefs and creating integrated campaign plans, involving digital, print, ambient and outdoor advertising campaigns as appropriate for the audience and objectives.
  • Designing leafets, posters and other marketing material in line with brand guidelines.
  • Designing and uploading merchandise and educational aids to be sold at events and on the online shop.
  • Using email marketing and google Adwords to attract new subscribers and keep the existing ones apprised of new information.
  • Obtaining and comparing quotations for various aspects of marketing campaigns including print, digital and online, and media advertising.

Director at Design By Amos March 2012 - Present (1 year)

Filming and Editing Technician at Autism West Midlands July 2011 - August 2011 (2 months)

Work completed over two weeks consisted of filming and editing a short film detailing the services of Autism West Midlands. This involved traveling to various satellites of the company and once there, working delicately with those effected with autism. Due to the scheduled nature of the work, I had to ensure impeccable time management and using my initiative when required in-order to progress with the project.

Marketing Assistant at London Borough of Hillingdon July 2010 - August 2010 (2 months)

During my time here I was involved in the creation and management of campaigns whether for information or promotional purposes. This involved consultations with large groups of people and ensuring their opinions were taken on board if they were beneficial. Time was spent collecting quotations for various avenues of marketing whether by phone or email, this required excellent communication skills.

Reasons for joining Wikipedia

[edit]

For this assignment I will be adding content to the page entitled Virtual World

[edit]

I aim to write a single paragraph to add to the existing page virtual worlds. This paragraph will add to the existing section of the 'future' of the virtual world. There are many articles that talk about this subject and I hope to consolidate them to make this subject appropriate for adding to Wikipedia.

Outline of content

[edit]

I have plans to add some content to the 'future' section of this page. I will be citing websites such as the following:

- http://www.cbsnews.com/2100-503063_162-6151438.html
- http://www.zdnet.com/blog/btl/the-future-of-virtual-worlds/5825

I have been advised (from the tea house) to use secondary sources as they show less biased toward the subject.

Previous thoughts

[edit]

With such virtual worlds being so large do they have watchdogs or do people govern them?

Have 'real life' laws been implemented in these virtual worlds?

Possible sources

[edit]

Primary source

Everquest

Second Life

Secondary source

Cnet

My first addition to Wikipedia

[edit]

On the 17th of February I added a single paragraph to the page Virtual World under the section 'future'. I made sure this paragraph was well cited and complied with the regulations implemented by Wikipedia. I am now waiting to see if it is accepted by my fellow Wikipedians and if not, enquire as to how I can improve my entry.

Second Addition

[edit]

I have added a new section to my sandbox and am going to introduce it to the Virtual Worlds talk page to see if anyone has any suggestions before adding it to the page.

I added this to the section 'ecomerce (legal)' on the 17th February 2013. With the text located on my sandbox.

My experience of Wikipedia as part of an assignment

[edit]

Being a week later, I can now reflect on what I have written on wikipedia and how well the procedure I followed suited the Wikipedia guidelines and community. Firstly the edits I made are still online and haven't been removed. This to me is a personal achievement and means I have full filled a personal goal. Secondly the interactions I have made on Wikipedia have been beneficial and not at all hostile as I have herd rumours of, this was welcomed. Finally, whilst I acknowledge that there are specific 'hoops' you have to jump through to write a successful article (or edit). I believe that Wikipedia can be unreliable because the content isn't necessarily being scrutinised, rather how you present it.

Thank You

The addition I made the the page Internet Addiction Disorder can be seen under the heading 'Internet Addiction and Pornography'.

To conclude looking at this assignment, it is needed to be said that Wikipedia and their volunteers need to be respected for their general willingness to help people such as us (students) to gain a firm understanding of how Wikipedia works and how we can contribute effectively and creatively. This being the last assignment at university in which we will look at wikipedia, I believe that it is highly unlikely that I return, however my respect for the platform and the people who work on it remain very high indeed! Thank you
