Background:
[edit]Michael Steven Sandford, born in Dorking, Surrey, England, is a British national who gained international attention for attempting to assassinate then-presidential candidate Donald Trump. Sandford has a history of mental health issues, including obsessive-compulsive disorder and anorexia, and had been living in the United States illegally after overstaying his visa.
Assassination Attempt
[edit]On June 18, 2016, Sandford attended a Trump rally at the Treasure Island Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. During the rally, he attempted to grab a police officer's gun with the intention of shooting Donald Trump. He was apprehended by law enforcement before he could carry out the act. Sandford had driven from California to Nevada and had practiced shooting at a Las Vegas gun range the day before the rally.
Legal Proceedings
[edit]Sandford was charged with disrupting government business and official functions and with illegal firearm possession. He was later diagnosed as being autistic but competent to stand trial. He pleaded guilty to the charges and was sentenced to 12 months and one day in prison in December 2016. Following his sentence, he was deported back to the United Kingdom.
Aftermath
[edit]The case brought significant attention to issues of mental health and immigration. Sandford's family and legal team highlighted his long-standing mental health problems and argued for leniency based on his condition.
