Horatio Gates Spafford (senior) was the father of the significantly more famous Horatio Gates Spafford, who wrote the well known hymn, "It is Well with My Soul." H. G. Spafford (senior) was a traveller, writer, inventor, farmer, and author of A gazetteer of the state of New-York, the first comprehensive geographical dictionary of the state, published in 1813.
