CsfG in Bacillus subtilis. Highly conserved bases are in red.

CsfG is a non-coding RNA that is transcribed only during sporulation, specifically in the forespore. It was discovered in Bacillus subtilis using a large scale computational screening based on phylogenetic profiling.[1] In vivo analysis confirmed that csfg transcription is regulated by SigG and SigF.[2] In competition with a wild-type strain, the csfG deleted strain show a loss of about 29 % at each cycle of growth, sporulation and germination, presumably as a consequence of a slight germination delay of the mutant spores. CsfG is present in many endospore formers, mostly Bacilli and some Clostridia, whereas it is absent from bacteria that do not produce endospores. This locus was originally reported on the reverse strand as a cis-regulatory element under the name "ylbH leader".[3] CsfG completely overlaps the ylbH element, with a 28-nt extension on the 5' end of CsfG (in B. subtilis).
