Greenland is divided into four municipalities: Kujalleq, Qaasuitsup, Qeqqata, and Sermersooq. The large Northeast Greenland National Park is not part of any municipality (unincorporated). The Thule Air Base (Pituffik), located as an enclave within Qaasuitsup municipality, is also an unincorporated area and does not belong to any municipality.

[edit]Qaasuitsup (Greenlandic: Qaasuitsup Kommunia) is a municipality in Greenland, operational from 1 January 2009. It consists of the former municipalities of western and northern Greenland, each named after the biggest settlement. Its population is 17,867 (as of January 2008).[1] The administrative center of the municipality is in Ilulissat.(In geographical order, from south to north)
Qeqqata
[edit]Qeqqata (Greenlandic: Qeqqata Kommunia) is a new municipality in western Greenland, operational from 1 January 2009. It consists of two former municipalities of western Greenland: Maniitsoq and Sisimiut, as well as the previously unincorporated area of Kangerlussuaq. The municipality was named after its location in central-western part of the country[2]. Its population is 9,627 (as of January 2008).[3] The administrative center of the municipality is in Sisimiut.
Sermersooq
[edit]Sermersooq (Greenlandic: Kommuneqarfik Sermersooq) is a municipality in Greenland, operational from 1 January 2009. It is home to the capital of Greenland, Nuuk, and is the most populous municipality in Greenland. Its population is 20,998 (as of January 2008)[4]. It consists of former municipalities of eastern Greenland − Ammassalik, Ittoqqortoormiit, and southwestern Greenland − Ivittuut, Nuuk and Paamiut.
Kujalleq
[edit]Kujalleq (Greenlandic: Kommune Kujalleq) is a municipality in far-southern Greenland, operational from 1 January 2009. It consists of the former Nanortalik, Narsaq, and Qaqortoq municipalities. It is the least-populated municipality in Greenland (population 7,755 as of January 2008).[5] Although most of the tourists are going to the southern part of Greenland because the Fjords are the most beautiful of Greenland.
History
[edit]Until January 1, 2009 Greenland consisted of three counties (amt): Kitaa/Vestgrønland (West Greenland), Tunu/Østgrønland (East Greenland) and Avannaa/Nordgrønland (North Greenland). Kitaa had 15 municipalities; Tunu had 2 and Avannaa had 1. The large Northeast Greenland National Park was in both East Greenland and North Greenland, but not part of any municipality (unincorporated).
