Saint Benedict Press, LLC (SBP), a division of Goodwill Publishers, is a publisher founded in Charlotte, NC in 2006.
History
[edit]Saint Benedict Press, founded in 2006, is the parent company for a variety of imprints inluding TAN Books and Catholic Courses. The company's name pays homage to the guiding influence of the Rule of Saint Benedict and the Benedictine monks of Belmont Abbey, North Carolina, just a short distance from the company's headquarters in Charlotte, NC. The mission of Saint Benedict Press is to publish and distribute products reflective of the Catholic intellectual tradition and to present these products in an attractive and accessible manner.
Saint Benedict Press initially published public domain classic Catholic titles such as Dark Night of the Soul, Dialogue of Saint Catherine of Siena, and Imitation of Christ. Saint Benedict Press also published the New American Bible in an effort to break into the Bible market.
In 2008, Saint Benedict Press purchased TAN Books & Publishers out of bankruptcy.[1] TAN Books & Publishers was known and loved by generations of readers for its traditional Catholic publications. "TAN" originally stood for the previous owner's initials. Post-acquisition, the TAN Books imprint was dedicated under the Latin motto: "Tuum Adoremus Nomen", meaning "Let Us Adore Your Name," referring to God. Saint Benedict Press transferred its catalogue of Catholic Classics to the new TAN Books imprint and expanded the line with a series of small accompanying guidebooks called The Classics Made Simple.
In 2010, Saint Benedict Press was among the first to publish the New American Bible Revised Edition. It also publishes the Douay Rheims Bible and the Revised Standard Version Catholic Edition. In 2011, Saint Benedict Press became a multimedia company with the launch of its imprint, Catholic Courses.
Today, Saint Benedict Press publishes works reflective of a Catholic worldview that are relevant to modern readers. The press claims that all titles are faithful to the magisterial teachings of the Catholic Church.
TAN Books
[edit]TAN Books & Publishers was founded in 1967 by Thomas A. Nelson in response to the perceived rapid decline in faith and morals in society and the Catholic Church. From its founding, TAN Books has been committed to the preservation and promotion of the spiritual, theological, and liturgical traditions of the Catholic Church. Since its acquisition by Saint Benedict Press, TAN Books publications have seen significant quality improvement. TAN Books had a reputation for using poor quality glue in its paperback bindings and many of its titles "cracked" at the spine. In addition to bringing the printing quality back to industry standard, TAN Books revised many of its titles with newly designed covers.
TAN Books publishes over 600 titles on Thomistic philosophy, traditional theology, Church doctrine, history, lives of the saints education resources, and devotional booklets.
Catholic Courses
[edit]Catholic Courses shares the riches of the Catholic Intellectual heritage through audio and video lectures presented by the best minds of the Catholic Church. Each course is comprised of 8 lectures and is categorized as Theology, History, Philosophy, Scripture, or Literature. Each lecture is approximately 30 minutes in length and is enhanced with visual aids and a full-color lecture guide. Catholic Courses emphasizes the educational nature of these courses and they are all taught by well-credentialed professors and scholars.
Catholic Courses also produces Electives, a shorter and less formal product than the full courses. Each Elective is comprised of 4 lectures which run approximately 30 minutes in length. These Electives are delivered by guest speakers who are generally notable Catholic authors, speakers, and personalities.
