Shine Louise Houston is a highly awarded, queer, black woman filmmaker. [1] She co-founded, and is the main director and producer of Pink and White Productions; an independent production company in San Francisco making queer pornography. [2] They are heavily involved in the feminist and queer art community as well as sexual health and sex worker activism. [3] Houston counters inauthentic representations in mainstream porn of (especially black) women’s, trans’, and queer folk’s, sexuality and desire. [4] As a creator of cultural production, Houston gives historically marginalized people control over the production of images that represent their own identities. [5] Featuring diverse body types and non-conforming genders as well as sexual identities, queer pornography is a platform to visibly make public the sexual subjectivity of queer people, and especially queer people of color, through self-representation. [6]Shine Louis Houston is a community based cultural producer committed to widening fields of possibilities for (especially black) women’s and gender non-conforming folks’ sexuality and desire. [7]
Education
Houston received a Bachelors in Fine Art Film from the San Francisco Arts Institute. [8]
Career
After graduating, Houston worked at a Good Vibrations sex shop for 5 years. [9] During her time at Good Vibrations she was unable to recommend queer pornography to customers in search of representations of their own sexual communities. [10] The community demand caused Houston to band together with some friends to create their own queer pornography. [11] They founded Pink and White Productions and in 2008 launched the queer pornography distribution site CrashPadSeries.com. [12] The companies first queer porn feature “Crash Pad”, starring Jiz Lee, establishes the location of all the subsequent CrashPadSeries episodes. [13] The Crash Pad is an apartment located in San Francisco dedicated to mutual pleasure based queer sex and Shine Louise Houston acts as Key Keeper to The Crash Pad. [14] Houston incorporates into the scene her presence behind the camera via her own kink, and participation, as a voyeur. [15] In the feature ‘SuperFreak’ she stars as the ghost of Rick James. [16] The ghost possesses people on a mission to turn the whole word into SuperFreaks having great sex. [17]All models in Pink and White Productions videos seek them out, and Houston organizes scenes around the model’s personal fantasizes. [18] CrashPadSeries.com debuts episodic, reality based, queer pornography videos. [19]. The site is set-up like a blog, featuring photos and identity profiles of the stars to make visible the alternate gender identities and sexualities represented in their videos [20]. Houston is currently in post-production for their next feature, Snapshot, a horror dedicated to complicating the limited ‘coming out’ narrative that is predominantly featured in media. [21]
