Dr. Hadiyah Green aims to beat
- REDIRECT cancer
by using lasers. She attended Alabama A&M University and switched her major three times before deciding with Physics. She is the first of her family to graduate from college. She soon found out that her aunt was diagnosed with cancer and refused to get treatment. Her aunt would rather die than go through chemo and radiation. After he aunt passed her uncle was diagnosed with cancer, but chose to go through chemo. Dr. green said “He really had it bad. The treatment disfigured him. The man that raised me wasn’t the same. He just wants the same person.” (Josiah Bates 3-31-17) After he uncle passed she dedicated all her time and energy to fighting cancer. She got her masters and a PH.D in physicals at university of Alabama Birmingham. Her goal was to treat cancer in a way with no side effects. While reading about laser technology she concluded that she could use lasers to target cancer cells directly. Dr. Green spent three years in a lab and in those three years she was developing her laser technology that uses

to destroy cancer cells. This is beneficial so that the healthy cells wont be affected by the treatment. After testing her treatment on mice she was successful and became the first person to use nanoparticles to cure cancer. Bates, J. (2017, March 31). Dr. Hadiyah Green Wants to Use Lasers to Kill Cancer Cells. Dr. Green is one of less than one hundred black female physicists in the country. She was rewarded $1.1 million grant to continue to develop her patent-pending technology to treat cancer using laser-activated nanoparticles. At a young age she is and has accomplished so much being a black-women in a field dominated by white men. "As a physicist I've created a physical treatment that is not specific to the biology of the cancer," she said. "It's a platform technology. It's not cancer type specific, though it can treat the cancer specifically." (Dr. Green) (Anna Claire Vollers 09-22-2017) Dr. Green’s goal is to change the way cancer is being treated and by receiving invitations to guest speak at

and professional groups; she gets her voice out there. She is extremely busy but still makes time to and considers it her responsibility to be noticed since there are few black women in STEM fields; she wants to make a difference. C. regression in mice and she was awarded a $1 million grant from the Veterans Affairs' Office of Research & Development to start clinical trials. She is the 50th African American female in the United States to get a Ph.D in physics. Dr. Greens best piece of advice is "Don’t let someone else's limitations define your reality and don’t let them tell you what's not possible. It may not be possible for them, but it may be very possible and realistic for you."(Lauren Helmer) Dr. Green inspires many people including me to follow our dreams no matter how impossible it may seem.
