[edit]Environmental Impact
According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), an automobile releases anywhere from 0.66 to 1.20 pounds of pollutants per mile driven by each car. These pollutants include Carbon Dioxide, Carbon Monoxide, Nitrogen Oxide, and Hydrocarbon. These pollutants are released into the air, where they have a negative effect on air quality, contribute to global warming, and pollute the environment in general.[1]
In Southern California alone, the average driver commutes approximately 1000 to 1500 miles per month, most of which is from home to work, and back again. In other words, the average driver in Southern California produces approximately 660 to 1800 pounds of pollutants into the air, per car each month. [2]
Automobile pollution has become such a big deal that technologies to develop cleaner sources of energy has lead to the invention of electric and hybrid cars (a car that uses two distinct power sources) were developed to drastically reduce pollution given off by automobiles.

Environmental Record
[edit]Illinois Tool Works Inc.(ITW) was ranked number 100 on the Political Economy Research Institutes "THE TOXIC 100: Top Corporate Air Polluters in the United States" list for 2002.[1]Illinois Tool Works Ring carriers produce about 47% less emissions released into the atmosphere than paperboard cartons and about 36% less than shrink-film 6-pack packages.[2] From taking a look at their activities, environmental coordinators were able to have certain products reformulated to less environmentally damaging products. Also, certain processes were amended to have a reduced environmental impact. The company took another look at the possibilities of reducing and recycling waste, maximizing our efficient use of natural resources, and delivering environmental awareness training to the whole of the work force. This last activity led to the creation of an Environmental Team comprising seven volunteers from the workforce to further environmental improvements and in March 2004 the Company received Green Dragon Level 5 Standard.[3]
