His father was Thomas Myles (23 October 1796 - c. 1835) from Cramond in Midlothian.

His mother was Margaret Short (c. 1795 - c. 1865). Thomas and Margaret married on 11 November 1813 in Edinburgh.

John Myles was born on 31 March 1822 in Edinburgh. He was baptised on 12 April 1822.[7][8]

He married Jean Logan Bain (15 September 1824 - 17 December 1862) from Edinburgh.[9] They married on 18 May 1848 in Edinburgh.

He later married Louisa Susanna Fellowes (14 December 1836 - 3 March 1932) from Edinburgh.[10][11] They married on 9 November 1865 in Edinburgh.[12]

Admitted to Royal Edinburgh Asylum (REA) on 21 May 1881.[13]
