His mother was Jean Laird (born c. 1812) from Paisley.[7][8] James [Snr] and Jean married on 11 March 1836 in Neilston, Renfrewshire.[9]

James Laird Macfarlane was born in Paisley on 8 July 1836.

He married Eliza Hollis (baptised 10 February 1828 - 1905) from Felpham in Sussex, England. She was the daughter of Thomas Hollis and Mary Ann Taylor.[10][11]

James and Eliza married in 1863 in St. Pancreas, London.

Their son James [Jnr] (born c. 1864) was a clerk.[12] Their daughter Eliza (1868 - 1947) became an artist specialising in flowers like her father.

After Eliza died, James had a short-lived marriage to Florence Maria Bartlett. They married on 12 May 1906 at Upper Norwood in London.[13]

In 1909 he was ordered to pay alimony of 15 shillings per week to Florence. Florence said she was still living with her stepdaughter but this was inconvenient. James did not appear at Penge Police Court. He was recorded as living in 637 Alexandra Parade, Dennistoun, Glasgow.[14]

In 1910 he was imprisoned for a month after admitting not paying alimony to Florence. At trial he said he had not been married for 3 and a half years.[15]
