John MacNiven (17 November 1849 - 10 July 1894) was a Scottish painter.
Life
[edit]His father was Peter MacNiven (1 April 1802 - 28 November 1878) from the Isle of Lismore in Argyll. He was a beamer in a printfield.
His mother was Isobel Maclaren (born c. 1811) from Glasgow.
John MacNiven was born in the Gorbals in Glasgow on 17 November 1849.

[edit]He died in Skye on the shore of Loch Scaviag overlooking the Isle of Soay, on a wilderness and painting trip with his artist friend Walter McAdam. He was buried in Eynort, Skye.[1]
