Hamilton Macmillan (3 May 1864 - 1 July 1916) was a Scottish painter.[1][2] He is sometimes denoted as Hamilton Macmillan Jnr. to differentiate from his father.
Life
[edit]His father was Hamilton Macmillan [Snr] (3 November 1835 - 12 June 1905), a wine and spirit merchant from Glasgow. Hamilton [Snr] was also an artist.
His mother was Grace Smith (7 September 1837 - 1901) from Glasgow. Hamilton [Snr] and Grace married in Helensburgh on 29 August 1860.
Hamilton John Macmillan was born on 3 May 1864 in Helensburgh.
Art
[edit]Both [Snr] and [Jnr] painted similar landscapes, with [Jnr] paintings dating later from around 1886 onwards but there is overlap in dates. [Snr] tended to sign his initials around the date, [Jnr] using a fuller 'H. J. Macmillan'.
Death
[edit]He died on 1 July 1916 at Balcomie, Helensburgh. The death certificate states he died of kidney disease and general weakness.
