Life

[edit]

His father was Walter Mackay (c. 1809 - 26 September 1885), a gaelic schoolmaster from Dornoch.

His mother was Elspeth Gordon (born c. 1816), known as Eppie, from Rogart in Sutherland. Walter and Elspeth married on 26 May 1837 in Dornoch, with the banns being issued on the same day at Tain.

Charles Gordon Mackay was born c. 1843 in Dornoch. As an artist he used the name Gordon Mackay, but he also became a doctor and surgeon in Lochcarron.

He married Elizabeth Anne Macrae (8 November 1859 - 8 May 1954), known as Bessie, from Harris in Eilean Siar. They married on 27 April 1887 at Fulham in London, England. Bessie, a twin sister, was born with a deformity on her little finger. Her sister married at the same day and place as her.

Their son, Alasdair Gordon Douglas Mackay (27 July 1891 - 12 January 1968), became a noted artist.
