Mary Sutherland Hunter (21 June 1899 - 31 December 1963) was a Scottish painter.[1][2]

Life

Her father was the Rev. John Sutherland Hunter (17 November 1856 - 15 January 1943) from Edinburgh. He was ordained in 1890 at Holytown, Lanarkshire and became minister of the Holytown Parish Church. He later moved back to Edinburgh, where the family stayed at 26 Hermitage Drive.[3][4] [5][6]

Her mother was Eliza Mathewson (22 August 1862 - 26 March 1924), known as Lizzie, from Comely Park Place, Dunfermline. Lizzie was the daughter of William Mathewson, a damask manufacturer, and Mary Spedding.[7] John and Lizzie married on 26 February 1895 in Dunfermline.

Mary Sutherland Hunter was born as Mary Spedding Hunter on 21 June 1899 in Holytown. Her sister Elizabeth Dorothy Hunter (19 May 1901 - 19 July 1990) followed.

Death

She died on 31 December 1963 at a hospital in Edinburgh. The funeral was on 3 January 1964 at Warriston crematorium in Edinburgh.[8]
