Isabella Bissett (c. 1828 - 23 April 1870) was a Scottish painter. She emigrated to Canada in the 1850s and continued painting there.
Life
[edit]She was the daughter of James Bissett (born c. 1796), a portrait painter. They stayed in Gardener's Brae in Banff in 1841.[1]
She stayed in John Street in Pittenweem with her two sisters Helena (born c. 1832) and Margaret (born c. 1825).[2] Another sister Jane (born c. 1827) was not in the household in 1851.[3][4]
She emigrated to Canada before 1858 and then stayed in Peterborough, Ontario.[5] [6]
Art
[edit]In 1848 she exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy her works: Smugglers On The Outlook - Scene Near Newark Castle, Coast Of Fife and Repose Of Gipsies.[7]
In 1851 she exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy her work: Glenburn Bridge, Kingsford, Aberdeenshire.[8]
While in Canada, she painted works like Catskill Landscape and Hudson Valley Landscape.[9]
Death
[edit]She died on 23 April 1870 in Peterborough, Ontario.[10] It was remarked that she died after a lingering illness.[11] It was noted as phthisis on the death certificate, now known as tuberculosis.[12]
