Alexander Campbell (3 July 1764 - 15 May 1824) was a Scottish painter.[1] He was also a early travel writer, writing tours of Scotland; and a organist and music master in Edinburgh. Walter Scott was one of his pupils. He studied medicine.
Life
[edit]His father was Colin Campbell.
His mother was Katharine Bower.
Alexander Campbell was born on 3 July 1764 in Edinburgh.
He married Sarah Cargill (1752 - 8 March 1832) in Edinburgh, on 25 May 1790. This was Sarah's second marriage as she first married Major Ranald Macdonell of Keppoch around 1771.
Art
[edit]He was a topographical artist, mainly working in pen and sepia.
His travel book Journey from Edinburgh through parts of North Britain was published in 1802.
Death
[edit]He died on 15 May 1824 in Edinburgh. He is buried in Canongate Churchyard.[2]
