William Charles Blair (6 February 1851 - 9 July 1886) was a Scottish painter.[1]

Life

His father was William Richardson Blair (31 March 1818 - 4 February 1852), a merchant from Perth, that settled in Funchal, Madeira.[2] William Richardson Blair was the son of James Charles Blair and Margaret Richardson.

His mother was Margaret Matthew (died 8/ 9 July 1855, Cumberland Cottage, Bothwell)[3][4] She was the youngest daughter of Thomas Matthew of Kincardine.[5] William and Margaret married at the British consulate on Madeira, Portugal on 29 May 1848.[6]

They had a daughter Margaret Blair born on 29 April 1849 in Funchal.[7]

Their son William Charles Blair was born on 6 February 1851 in Funchal.[8]

After William Richardson Blair died in 1852, Margaret Matthew returned to Scotland with her children; and William and Margaret were brought up in Scotland.

He died on 9 July 1886, drowning in the Chalk River, a tributary of the Ottawa River, Canada.

The value of his estate was £2835, 8 shillings and 6 pence. His sister Margaret was the executor.

From the Glasgow Herald of Monday 02 August 1886:

BLAIR. Accidentally drowned while on a canoeing tour on the river Ottawa, Canada, William Charles Blair. only son of the late William Richardson Blair, Funchal, Madeira. Friends will please accept of this intimation.
