James Elder Purves (3 May 1839 - 23 February 1887) was a Scottish painter.[1][2]

His father was Robert Purves (c. 1814 - 3 May 1882), a writer (solicitor) from Kilmany in Fife.[8]

His mother was Agnes Wighton (c. 1816 - January 1869) from Gordon in Berwickshire.[9]

James Elder Purves was born on 3 May 1839 in Edinburgh.[10]

He married Elizabeth Maddiston (9 December 1839 - 15 February 1886) from Chatton, Northumberland in England. They married on 6 July 1871 at Cranston, Midlothian.

They had children Robert, James and Thomas.

The family moved to the United States in 1883, arriving in New York that year on 2 June.

Death

He died on 23 February 1887 at Lower Lake, Lake County, California, USA. He set up a farm there.[11] The value of his estate was £128 and 6 pence.

He was buried in Lower Lake cemetery, along with his wife.[12]
