Her father was Dr. Alexander Peddie (3 June 1810 - 19 January 1907), a physician from Edinburgh.[4]
Her mother was Clara Elizabeth Sibbald Anderson (17 August 1821 - 17 June 1903) from Selkirk. Alexander and Clara married on 23 January 1844 in Edinburgh, after banns were issued in Selkirk on 13 January 1844.
Barbara Smith Peddie was born on 5 May 1848 at 11 Rutland Street in Edinburgh.[5][6][7]
