His father was John Patrick (16 January 1831 - 19 May 1923), a Photographer, and a Portrait & Landscape Painter from Buckhaven, Fife.[7]

His mother was Jane Rutherford (13 December 1828 - 10 December 1901) from Scoonie in Fife. John and Jane married in Scoonie on 16 February 1852.

James Patrick was born on 28 May 1863 in Scoonie, Fife.[8][9]

He married Helen Manson Bissett (born c. 1864) from Kirkcaldy in Fife.

He died on 4 September 1933 in St. Andrews College Hospital, Fife. He was buried in Pittenweem parish churchyard.[10]
