Monro Scott Orr (7 October 1874 - 29 August 1955) was a Scottish painter.[1][2] He became noted for children's book illustrations.[3]

Life

His father was William Orr (born c. 1841 - 10 March 1936) from Fenwick, Ayrshire, a builder of fireproof structures, before becoming a shipping agent.

His mother was Margaret Ronald Scott (born c. 1846) from Brechin in Angus. William and Margaret married on 15 July 1870 in Brechin.

Monro Scott Orr was born at High Street, Irvine on 7 October 1874.[4][5]

He married Elizabeth Lewars Gilchrist (8 September 1878 - 15 December 1965) from Chapelton, South Lanarkshire.[6] They married in 1903 in Glassford, South Lanarkshire.

His brothers were the artists Jack Orr (10 April 1888 - 22 April 1961) and Stewart Orr (21 January 1872 – 24 November 1944).

Death

He died on 29 August 1955 at 7.55 pm at the Benvarren cottage in the village of Corrie, Isle of Arran, Scotland. The death certificate states he died of cardiovascular degeneration.
