John Watson Nicol (12 January 1856 - 31 May 1926) was a Scottish painter.[1][2]

His father was the artist Erskine Nicol (3 July 1825 - 8 March 1904) from Leith in Midlothian.

His mother was Jessie Watson (23 August 1827 - 26 May 1863) from Larbert in Stirlingshire. She was Erskine's first wife. Erskine and Janet married on 10 June 1851 in South Leith, Edinburgh.

John Watson Nicol was born on 12 January 1856 at 15 Fettes Row in Edinburgh.[5]

He married Charlotte Ellen Cope (c. 1852 - 22 April 1936) from Kensington, London. They married in 1876 in Kensington, London.

Their eldest son John Erskine Nicol was an artist, he died in Egypt in 1904.[6][7] Their middle son Hamish became a surgeon.[8][9] Their youngest son was premature, born on 12 February 1882 at 3 Edwardes Place, in Kensington, London but he only survived a few hours.[10]

John Watson Nicol's stepbrother was the artist Erskine Edward Nicol.

He died on 31 May 1926 at 8 Well Road in Hampstead, London.[11][12]
