Robert Herberton Terrell, the first African American judge to serve in Washington, DC. He was born in Orange, Virginia on November 27, 1857 to parents Harris and Louisa Ann Terrell.[1][2]Terrell graduated cum laude from Harvard University in 1884, then went on to attend Howard University School of Law.
On October 18, 1891, Terrell married Mary Church Terrell. The two met at the Preparatory School for Colored Youth, now known as the M Street High School, in Washington, D.C. Mary Church accepted a teaching position at the high school, where Terrell was principal.[1]
