It was always a dream of Atong to be part of a beauty pageant but that was all it was since South Sudan was not an independent nation until 2011. She knew pretty early on that being a beauty queen was more than just being called the most beautiful girl and wearing the crown, it was bigger than that. It is about using that title to put light on and address important issues that affect her community and her nation at large.

Miss Malaika Pageant

[edit]

Her first competition was in 2009 for a local beauty pageant comptition called Miss Malaika that started in 2005 when Sudan and South Sudan Hero and freedom fighter Dr John Grange signed peace agreement. She was still a student at the university and was advised then by family and friends to take part in it. She won the competition and became the most respected and favorite Miss Malakia of all time.
