Ormond Beach Wetlands is a 1,500-acre area (610 ha) along to a two-mile-long (3.2 km) shoreline adjacent to the industrial tract of Ormond Beach in Oxnard, California. The wetlands complex, used for agriculture and industry, lies between the Industrial Drain at the south end of Port Hueneme Beach and the northwestern boundary of Pt. Mugu Naval Air Station, which encompasses Mugu Lagoon. Although the wetlands have been drained, filled and degraded over the past century, this is one of the few areas in Southern California with an intact dune-transition zone–marsh system.[2]
Restoration
[edit]The site is a priority restoration project for the California State Coastal Conservancy along with the Ballona Wetlands, Los Cerritos Wetlands in Long Beach, and the Tijuana River Estuary.[3][4]
