[edit]"Deforestation[edit]
[edit]The GMS was one of the world's most densely forested areas in the 1970s, but has since lost a third of its forests. It is on a trajectory that will lose it another third between 2010–2030."
Outline for the section:
- Longer background on the "world's most densely forested areas in the 1970s"
- Causes of the deforestation
- Effects of the deforestation
- Current mitigation efforts and policy initiatives
Bibliography
[edit]- Lohani, S., Dilts, T. E., Weisberg, P. J., Null, S. E., & Hogan, Z. S. (2020). Rapidly accelerating deforestation in Cambodia’s Mekong River Basin: A comparative analysis of spatial patterns and drivers. Water, 12(8), 2191.[1]
- This is a peer-reviewed scientific journal, so it should be a reliable source. This source provides scientific background on the issue which might be helpful in covering all bases.
- Costenbader, J., Broadhead, J., Yasmi, Y., & Durst, P. B. (2015). Drivers affecting forest change in the greater mekong subregion (GMS): an overview. FAO: Rome, Italy.[2]
- This source is a policy brief written by the FAO, so it should be a reliable and relatively balanced source. It provides a good overview of information on the topic. However, it is a bit outdated so I am hoping to find a newer version. This source can be used in my discussion of the causes of deforestation in the Mekong region.
- Rerolle, F., Dantzer, E., Lover, A. A., Marshall, J. M., Hongvanthong, B., Sturrock, H. J., & Bennett, A. (2021). Spatio-temporal associations between deforestation and malaria incidence in Lao PDR. Elife, 10, e56974.[3]
- This is a peer-reviewed journal, so it should be a reliable source. The content is of interest because it describes health impacts of deforestation, which relates to climate change. This will be included in my discussion of effects of deforestation.
- Kwan, R. (2021). Tutorial: How to use the Mekong Deforestation App.[4]
- This is not a reputable source for statistics or hard information, but its discussion of the app can be used as a supporting feature of the Wikipedia entry. I will include this in my discussion of mitigation methods of today.
- Caroll, J. (2018). Pulse of the Forest: The State of The Greater Mekong’s Forests and the Everyday People Working to Protect Them. WWF.[5]
- This source provides strong data to inform readers. I can use this source to lay out basic information and statistics.
