The hidden battlefront (Chinese: 隐蔽战线; pinyin: Yǐnbì zhànxiàn), sometimes articulated as "hidden front" or "hidden struggle", is a phrase in Chinese Communist Party jargon used to refer to espionage, counterespionage, and counterintelligence operations. It is more often used to describe clandestine activity in support of Chinese government objectives, but can also be used to describe enemy actions.
According to the Science of Military Strategy (战略学; Zhanlüe Xue), a core textbook for senior People's Liberation Army (PLA) officers, in a time of conflict, key enemy activities along the hidden battlefront are likely to include psychological warfare and “inciting defections” (策反; cefan).[1]
The term appears in this Chinese proverb:
鉴于我们隐蔽战线的特点,我们有再大的功荣, 也不能露在嘴上 "Given the characteristics of our work in the hidden battlefront, though we have another glorious achievement, we may not speak of it".[2]
