Early Life and Education

Ọbádélé Bakari Kambon was born on June 16, 1979. He holds dual citizenship in Ghana and the United States. He completed his undergraduate studies at Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in African American Studies with Magna Cum Laude honors. He then pursued graduate studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, obtaining two Master of Arts degrees: one in Linguistics and the other in African Languages and Literature, with a minor in Linguistics. His master’s thesis focused on the recurrent sound correspondences between Akan and Yoruba languages. Kambon earned his PhD in Linguistics from the University of Ghana, where his dissertation on serial verb nominalization in Akan was awarded the Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Best PhD Thesis in the Humanities.

Academic Career

Kambon is an Associate Professor at the University of Ghana’s Institute of African Studies, where he also served as the Head of the Language, Literature, and Drama Section from 2018 to 2023. His academic appointments have spanned various institutions, including Chicago State University, Northeastern Illinois University, and Malcolm X College, where he taught African languages, literature, and linguistics. He was also a Senior Research Fellow at the University of Ghana from 2017 to 2021 and a Fellow at the Lagos African Cluster Centre from 2020 to 2021.

Research Interests

Ọbádélé Kambon’s research spans a variety of fields, including historical linguistics, language and identity, African liberation (Abibifahodie), and classical African civilizations, particularly Kmt (Ancient Egypt). He has explored connections between ancient African languages, such as Mdw Ntr, and contemporary African languages. His work focuses on the preservation of African linguistic and cultural heritage, and he is an advocate for the restoration of Kmt and Ma’at.
