Shewanella oneidensis is a gram-negative species of bacteria that has potential as a bioremediant. Under aerobic conditions, Shewanella oneidensis, like most other organisms, uses oxygen as a terminal electron acceptor in cellular respiration. In the absence of oxygen, however, it is capable of using a wide range of species as an electron acceptor including Mn (III) and (IV), U (VI), sulfite, thiosulfate, elemental sulfur, dimethyl sulfoxide, and nitrate.
