Idina's full name is Idina Kim Menzel. She is an American actress, singer, and songwriter. Her Parents are Helene and Stuart Menzel and she has one sister named Cara Menzel. Idina's birthday is May 30th, 1971. Around the age of 15, Idina's parents divorced. Soon after she became a wedding and bar mitzvah singer. She went to New York University's School of the Arts and earned a Bachelors of Fine Arts degree in Drama.
In 1995, Idina auditioned for the role of Maureen in Rent, which was her first Broadway experience. She received a Tony award for Best Featured Actress in a Musical in 1997. Following her Broadway appearance she came out with her first ever solo album called "Still I Can't Be Still". Idina did lots of theatre work for quite some time, earning her a Drama Desk Award nomination for her role as Kate in the musical Manhattan.
In 2003, Idina started Wicked performances with co-star Kristin Chenoweth. She received Best Leading Actress in 2004 for her amazing performance as Elphaba in the Wicked musical. Around this time, Idina married Taye Diggs, after dating for 7 years. On January 8th, 2005, Idina fell through a trap door on the floor while performing a Wicked show, forcing her to take time off as Elphaba. Idina explained the story in better detail on The Late Late show, she said "one night there was like a sub automation person on and they did it wrong and they had it open already so I walked into a five foot open hole. I caught myself, but I broke my rib." She also talks about how the entire time she was in the hospital, her face was painted lime green! Having just come from the theatre. Later, (after her rib healed), she started the west-side tour of Wicked and soon became one of the highest paid female performers, earning 30,000$ per week.
After Wicked Idina appeared in "See What I Wanna See" which earned her even more Drama Desk Award and Drama League Award nominations. She also starred in some films like: Just a Kiss, Kissing Jessica Stein, Tollbooth, Water, Ask the Dust, and Enchanted. Her second solo album, Here, was released in 2004 and she kicked off the I Stand tour in 2008. On November 1st, 2008, she released Hope. A song where all proceeds she received would go to Stand Up 2 Cancer. In 2009, Idina gave birth to her son, Walker Diggs. December 10th, 2009, Idina scored a recurring role on Glee as Shelby Corcoran. She played that role for a couple years then eventually, in 2013, she and Taye Diggs got divorced.
In 2013, Frozen came out. Where idina Menzel played Elsa, a powerful ice queen. One of the things Frozen is known for, is the ballad Let It Go. Let It Go was sung by Idina Menzel but in a CNN interview she talks about how they had to change the scale of the song. Here's what she said. "I realized that I felt like my voice sounded too mature in order to really embody this young women that you see in the movie. And so I asked them to take it up."
Now, in 2024, Idina is still going strong and starring in the new, upcoming, Broadway musical, Redwood. Where Idina plays the lead character Jesse. However, there is also another thing coming out in 2024 that relates to Idina. Wicked is being produced in movie form. While in an interview, Idina says: "I'm so excited. I've just been so proud of it and it's gonna reach a whole new audience." She also later claims she looks at the movie as a compliment rather than her being replaced, which is beyond true. No one can play Elphaba quite like Idina can. No one can fill her shoes.
