The Music of Indonesia series is a 20-CD collection recorded over the span of eight years from 1991-1999 and published in the year 2000, showcasing the music from multiple artists of the Indonesian archipelago, spanning from traditional music to contemporary styles popular in Indonesia's capital, Jakarta . Produced by Indonesian music expert and scholar Philip Yampolsky, it is a collaboration between Smithsonian Folkway Recordings and the Indonesian Society for the Performing Art. [1]

A best-of compilation containing 15 individual tracks also exists, titled Discover Indonesia.

Content

[edit]

The 20 CDs in the collection all contain several tracks focused on music made using certain instruments, within certain contexts (such as funerals), or within certain areas. Collectively, the series contains 291 individual tracks.

Reception

[edit]

Music of Indonesia was well-received due to its ambition and scale. RootsWorld described it as a "chance to expand one's appreciation and enjoyment of often-localized genres that otherwise probably never would be heard by western audiences". [2]
